Getting started
How do I make a mosaic?
Tap Choose Photo (or Take Photo), type or paste your words in the box, then tap Make My Mosaic. The mosaic appears at the top of the screen with an Adjust panel underneath.
What kind of photo works best?
Pictures with a clear subject and good contrast — a face against a plain background, a bright sunset, a bold logo — read best. Busy, dark or low-contrast photos can look murky because every letter takes the colour of the photo beneath it. If that happens, raise Brightness and Contrast.
What is "Suggest words: AI generated photo description"?
After you choose a photo, this button asks Apple Intelligence on your iPhone to write a few words about it, which become the text of your mosaic. You can edit or replace them. It runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded.
I don't see the Suggest words button
It needs an iPhone with Apple Intelligence that is running iOS 27 or later, with Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. If your iPhone doesn't support it, the rest of the app works exactly the same — just type your own words.
What happens if my text is short?
The text repeats as many times as needed to fill the whole picture, so even a single word or name works.
Adjusting your mosaic
What do the sliders do?
Detail sets how many letters fit across the picture (20 to 160): fewer for a bold, chunky look, more for a finer one. Horizontal and Vertical spacing set how far apart the letters sit, from 0% to 200% — below 100% they crowd and overlap, above it gaps open up. Brightness and Contrast change the colour of the letters (the background is always black). Skip spaces packs the letters together instead of keeping the gaps in your text. Reset Sliders puts the spacing, brightness and contrast back to normal.
Why doesn't the picture change instantly when I drag a slider?
The mosaic redraws a moment after you pause. At high detail on a large photo this can take a fraction of a second; a small spinner shows in the corner of the picture while it works.
Can I change the letter size or the background colour?
Not in this version — the letters keep a fixed size (use spacing and detail to change the look) and the background is black.
Saving and sharing
Nothing happens when I tap Save to Photos
The first time, iOS asks whether Pixel Prose may add pictures to your library — tap Allow. If you declined earlier, open Settings → Pixel Prose → Photos and allow adding photos, then try again.
Can I send the mosaic to someone?
Yes — tap Share to send it with Messages, Mail, AirDrop or any app on your iPhone, or to save it to Files.
"Take Photo" is greyed out
That button is only available on a device with a working camera (it is disabled in the iOS Simulator). If it's greyed out on your iPhone, check Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps for the Camera, and Settings → Pixel Prose → Camera.
Your data
Do my photos or words leave my phone?
No. The mosaic is built entirely on your device and nothing is uploaded. See the privacy policy.
Is there an account, a subscription or a watermark?
No account, no subscription, no ads and no watermark. Pixel Prose is free.
